summer travel reading

June 20, 2008

I came across an article on Saturday that immediately extended my reading wish-list by at least five times. In it, many authors recommended books set in or about places they are either originally from, or know intimately well.. and in both cases, love to pieces.

So, you’ve got Ahdaf Soueif recommending books on Egypt, Dave Eggers on Chicago, William Dalrymple on India, Caryl Phillips on the Caribbean, Colin Thubron on China and David Mitchell on Japan. No one could ask for better reading company.

The wonderful thing about travel reading is that it works whether or not you actually travel to that destination. If you do it helps you understand more about the place you are. And if you don’t or can’t, just sitting down on the grass with any one of these books will take you there for free.

Where are you going this summer, in real life or by book? At the moment, I’m in London via Jamaica
