school’s out!

June 11, 2008

I read a couple of years ago that the four remaining Augustine monks at St. Bernard’s pass were having to give up their famous rescue dogs for adoption, as there were too few of them to care for the dogs properly. The one condition for this was that they return to the pass every summer.

It seems like their new home is in Martigny, Switzerland. This photo, taken on Monday the 9th of June by Olivier Maire of AP, shows what it feels like to be off work for the summer! The blurb accompanying the photo said, ‘A dog of the Saint Bernard hospice has fun in the snow on the Great St. Bernard Pass between Switzerland and Italy after returning from their winter quarters in Martigny, Switzerland. The dogs will spend their summertime on the pass and return to Martigny at the onset of winter for their search and rescue duties. The Saint Bernhard dogs were formerly bred in the travelers’ hospice on the pass as rescue dogs for avalanche victims.’ Oh, and sadly the brandy barrel is just a myth apparently…

Here in Oslo the first holiday makers are starting to make their way out of town too. With the weather as nice as it is and the long days, I don’t mind staying behind for a change. My turn will come soon enough!
