indian facial hair

I caught the key words in this story listening to Outlook on the BBC World Service, literally seconds before falling asleep last night. This morning I had to dig deep to remember but it all came back to me suddenly, and a look on the net pulled up the photographs behind the story.

Photographer Chris Stowers has catalogued the beards and taches of his adopted country, India and together with Richard McCallum has recently published the book ‘Hair India – A Guide to the Bizarre Beards and Magnificent Moustaches of Hindustan’. The authors have also coined several new moustache names: the stunning display above of a gentleman in Rajasthan has been christened the ‘Bullet Heads’ beard, a sub-species of the common handlebar.

More photographic excerpts here and background here, with one last bit of additional trivia from the interview with McCallum, namely the existence of a 50p moustache monthly bonus given to policemen in some states of India as it is believed the moustaches give them more authority!
