river walk by candlelight

September 26, 2008

Last night, for the third year in a row, all the electric lights along Akerselva were switched off and replaced by thousands of candles. This event, known as Elvelangs, is accompanied by music, dance, acting and fire performances at intervals along the river.

Great idea, but this year at least, a little disappointing, though there were many enthusiastic walkers. Some performances were good, like fire jugglers, and a couple of little bands, but in general the art/light installations were hard to access or view, and some other ‘performances’ were just plain terrible. One group literally dressed up in bedsheets and made spooky noises, apparently to drum up interest for their autumn ghost play.

I’m all for a platform for amateur groups to perform for the public, but surely Oslo can do better than that?
